On this World Day Against the Death Penalty, we, the undersigned organisations, express our horror at the alarming surge in executions in Saudi Arabia.
During the month of August, Egyptian courts issued death sentences to 39 defendants in 30 cases. Among them, 2 were issued final verdicts that could not be appealed.
During the first half of 2025, Egyptian courts issued death sentences to 269 defendants in 194 cases. Among them, 17 were issued final verdicts that could not be appealed.
During the month of May, Egyptian courts issued death sentences to 45 defendants in 38 cases. Among them, 6 were issued final verdicts that could not be appealed.
We, the undersigned organisations, are gravely fearful for the lives of hundreds of prisoners threatened with imminent execution in Saudi Arabia for non-lethal drug-related offences, including scores of Egyptian, Ethiopian and Somali nationals.
During the month of March, Egyptian courts issued death sentences to 34 defendants in 24 cases. Additionally, 8 defendants' papers were referred to the Grand Mufti in 7 other cases.
During the month of April, Egyptian courts issued death sentences to 44 defendants in 29 cases. Among them, one was issued final verdicts that could not be appealed.
